Im Rahmen von SEE THE SOUND (17. – 21.11.2021), dem Filmfestival von SoundTrack_Cologne, wird erneut der Preis für die Beste Musikdokumentation vergeben. Nominiert für den Wettbewerb sind acht Filme, von denen vier Deutsche Premiere und vier NRW-Premiere feiern.
Die Nominierten sind: Shut up Sona von Deepti Gupta, Poly Styrene: I am a Cliché von Celeste Bell und Paul Sng, Lisbon Beat von Rita Maia und Vasco Viana, Faith & Branko von Catherine Harte, All I Can Say von Danny Clinch, Taryn Gould, Colleen Hennessy und Shannon Hoon, No Ordinary Man von Aisling Chin-Yee und Chase Joynt, A Song Called Hate von Anna Hildur, The Forbidden Strings von Hasan Noori. Alle Filme werden im Kölner Kino Turistarama gezeigt.

Der mit 2.500 Euro dotierte Preis wird am Samstag, 20.11.2021 bei der Preisverleihung von SoundTrack_Cologne in der IHK Köln vergeben.
Als deutsche Premieren laufen: Shut up Sona (2019, IN), der die indische Sängerin und #MeToo-Aktivistin Sona Mohapatra bei ihrem Kampf gegen die patriarchalen Strukturen in Indiens Musikindustrie begleitet.
Poly Styrene: I am a Cliché (2021, GB) beleuchtet das Leben von Poly Styrene, der Gründerin der gefeierten Punkband „X-Ray Spex“, und zelebriert diese als wahre Pionierin des Punks.
In Lisbon Beat (2019, PT) begeben wir uns auf eine Reise durch die Vorstadt Lissabons und erhalten Einblick in das Leben einer Hand voll Musiker*innen, die ihren Platz in einer Stadt voller Identitätskämpfe suchen.
All I Can Say (2019, US) bietet einen einzigartigen Einblick in das Innere von Shannon Hoon, dem Sänger der Alternative-Rock-Band „Blind Melon“ – und zeigt seinen kreativen Prozess, sein Privatleben, den Aufstieg seiner Band und nicht zuletzt seinen Kampf mit der Sucht.
Als NRW-Premieren laufen: Die Doku Faith & Branko (2020, RS/GB), die ein junges ungleiches Musiker-Paar auf einer Reise begleitet, welche ihre Liebe auf eine unerwartete Probe stellt. No Ordinary Man (2020, CA), in dem das Leben des Jazz-Musikers Billy Tipton von Transkünstler*innen neu interpretiert wird und der einen anderen Blick auf den ungewöhnlichen Helden ermöglicht.
A Song Called Hate (2020, IS) rollt auf, was die isländische Band „Hatari“ zu ihrem skandalösen Eurovision Song Contest-Auftritt in Tel Aviv im Jahr 2019 motiviert hat.
Forbidden Strings (2019, AF/IR/QA) zeigt die gefährliche Reise von drei afghanischen Männern und einer iranischen Frau, die ihr erstes Rock-Konzert im vom Krieg zerrissenen Afghanistan spielen wollen.

SEE THE SOUND (November 17 – November 21, 2021), the film festival of SoundTrack_Cologne, will once again award the prize for the best music documentary. The German premieres are: Shut up Sona (2019, IN), which follows the Indian singer and #MeToo activist Sona Mohapatra in her fight against the patriarchal structures in India's music industry. Poly Styrene: I am a cliché (2021, GB), shows the life of the founder of the celebrated punk band 'X-Ray Spex' and honours her as a true pioneer of punk. In Lisbon Beat (2019, PT), we see a journey through the suburbs of Lisbon and the lives of a handful of musicians searching for their place in a city full of identity struggles. All I Can Say (2019, US) offers a unique insight into the mind of 'Blind Melon' singer Shannon Hoon, his creative process, his personal life, the rise of his band and also his struggle with addiction.
The following films celebrate their NRW premiers: The documentary Faith & Branko (2020, RS) accompanies a young, mismatched musician couple on a journey that puts their love to an unexpected test. No Ordinary Man (2020, CA), which shows the life of jazz musician Billy Tipton reinterpreted by trans artists and offers a different perspective on the unusual hero. In A Song Called Hate (2020, IS), Iceland's 2019 Eurovision Song Contest entry Hatari faces obstacles on their mission to politicise the TV spectacle. The eighth film, The Forbidden Strings (2019, AF), brings the dangerous journey of three Afghan men and an Iranian woman to the screen who set out to perform their first rock concert in war-torn Afghanistan.
