Preisgekrönte Filmkomponist*innen auf der SoundTrack_Cologne 18

Der diesjährige Oscarpreisträger Nicolas Becker („Sound of Metal”), Antonio Gambale („Unorthodox”), Nathaniel Méchaly („Taken“), Flemming Nordkrog (HARPA Award für „Shine Your Eyes”), Ali N. Askin („Barbaren”) und Susanne Hardt („Ethno”) werden auf der SoundTrack_Cologne 18 (17. - 20.11.2021) über ihre Film- und TV-Projekte sprechen. Zusätzlich bringt das Filmfestival SEE THE SOUND „Shine Your Eyes“ am Fr., 19.11. und das Filmfestival CinePop „Sound of Metal“ am Sa., 20.11. auf die Kinoleinwand.

Achtung: Der Einlass zu den Kongressveranstaltungen wird nur geimpften oder genesenen Personen gewährt („2G-Regel“). Nicolas Becker – „Sound of Metal”

And the Oscar goes to: Nicolas Becker! Der international renommierte Komponist, Sounddesigner und Foley Artist hat bereits mit großen Filmemachern wie Roman Polanski („Der Pianist”), Chris Nolan („Batman Begins“), Guillermo Del Toro („Hellboy 2”), Christophe Gans („Silent Hill“), Andrea Arnold („American Honey“), Denis Villeneuve („Arrival“) und Alfonso Cuarón („Gravity“) zusammengearbeitet. Sein IMDb-Eintrag weist alleine knapp 270 Credits als Foley Artist oder Sounddesigner auf. Seit einigen Jahren gewinnt auch seine Arbeit als Sound Supervisor zunehmend an Bedeutung. Seinen bis dato größten Erfolg konnte er dann dieses Jahr mit der Musik und dem Sounddesign zu Darius Marders „Sound of Metal“ verzeichnen, für diese Arbeit wurde er mit einem Academy Award und einen BAFTA Award prämiert.
Auf der SoundTrack_Cologne (STC) wird Becker in einer Case Study exklusive Einblicke in seine Arbeit an „Sound of Metal“ geben. Zudem zeigt CinePop den preisgekrönten Film am Samstag, 20. November 2021 in der Filmpalette Köln. Tickets: www.cine-pop.de


Nathaniel Méchaly – Composer Talk

Nathaniel Méchaly ist nicht nur Filmmusiker, sondern auch ein renommierter Komponist für Theatermusik und zeitgenössischen Tanz. Seinen ersten Score schrieb er 2004 für „Avanim“ von Raphael Nadjari, es folgten u.a. Guy Ritchies „Revolver“ (2005) und Wong Kar-wais „The Grandmaster“ (2013). Er ist der „Go-To“-Komponist für Luc Bessons Produktionsfirma „EuropaCorp“ und komponierte für sie unter anderem die „Taken“-Trilogie, „Colombiana“ (2011), „Angélique“ (2013) sowie die Serien „Transporter“ und „Taxi Brooklyn“.
Der Franzose gewann u.a. fünf BMI Awards. Außerdem wurde er bei den 33. Hong Kong Film Awards zusammen mit dem Komponisten Shigeru Umebayashi mit dem Preis für Beste Original Filmmusik und beim 8. Asian Film Award für „The Grandmaster” ausgezeichnet. Méchaly wird auf der STC sein bisheriges Werk im Interview vorstellen.


Ali N. Askin – „Barbaren“

Ali N. Askin ist ein Multitalent: Er komponiert, arrangiert, produziert und bewegt sich dabei zwischen den unterschiedlichsten Genres: Elektronische Musik, Hip Hop, Jazz Tunes und Club Tracks sind genauso Teil seiner Bandbreite wie auch Orchesterscores. Schon in den frühen 90er Jahren erlangte er durch seine Arbeit als Arrangeur und Assistent für Frank Zappa & Ensemble Modern (u.a. „The Yellow Shark“) internationale Bekanntheit.
Seit über 20 Jahren ist er zudem erfolgreicher Filmkomponist für deutsche und internationale TV-Serien und Filme. Insgesamt zählt sein IMDb-Eintrag über 70 Credits, darunter drei Mal „Pettersson und Findus“, aber auch den Dokumentarfilm „The Green Wave“ oder die Serie „Türkisch für Anfänger“. 2008 erhielt er die „Lola“ für die Beste Filmmusik für „Leroy". Zu seinen jüngsten Scores gehören „Dogs of Berlin“ und „Barbarians“ (Netflix). Ali Askin wird am Samstag, 20. November im Rahmen einer Case Study über seine Arbeit an „Barbarians“ sprechen.


Antonio Gambale – „Unorthodox“

„Unorthodox“ ist eine der erfolgreichsten Netflix-Serien und wurde u.a. mit dem Deutschen Fernsehpreis und dem Primetime Emmy ausgezeichnet sowie sieben weitere Male für diesen nominiert. Über zwei der Nominierungen konnte sich auch der italienische Komponist Antonio Gambale freuen, der die Musik für die gefeierte Studio Hamburg Produktion schrieb.
Der Italiener, der mit 19 seinen ersten Job als Komponist für eine TV-Werbung antrat, kann bis heute auf eine 25-jährige, erfolgreiche Karriere zurückblicken: Er hat unter anderem mit seinem Kollegen Philippe Rombi an Filmen von François Ozon und mit Pierre Adenot an „La Belle et La Bête (Die Schöne und das Biest)“ gearbeitet. Er vertonte den Spielfilm „Joe Cinque's Consolation“, der auf dem Toronto International Film Festival Premiere feierte. Gambale wird auf der SoundTrack_Cologne in einer Case Study seine Arbeit an „Unorthodox“ beleuchten.


Flemming Nordkrog – „Shine Your Eyes“

„Originell, unkonventionell und mystisch“, lobte die Jury: Vollkommen verdient gewann Flemming Nordkrog den diesjährigen HARPA Award für seinen außergewöhnlichen Score an „Shine your Eyes“ und konnte sich auch über den Carl Prisen Award 2021 freuen. Der dänische Komponist hat bereits Musik für mehr als 25 Spielfilme, zahlreiche TV-Serien, Dokumentarfilme, TV-Movies und Kurzfilme in Dänemark, Frankreich, Belgien, Brasilien und den USA geschrieben. Kürzlich beendete Nordkrog seine Arbeit an dem französischen Spielfilm „Ogre“ von Arnaud Malherbe, der dieses Jahr auf dem Filmfestival in Deauville vorgestellt wird, sowie an Philippe Liorets „Sixteen“. Insgesamt verzeichnet er über 100 Credits als Komponist.
Auf der STC wird er in einer Case Study seine Arbeit zu „Shine your Eyes“ vorstellen. SEE THE SOUND zeigt das Drama am Freitag, 19. November in der Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung. Tickets: www.seethesound.de.

Susanne Hardt – „Ethno“

Susanne Hardt ist Musiktheoretikerin und (Film-)Komponistin. Sie hat einen Bachelor in Musiktheorie, einen Master in Filmmusik und promoviert derzeit. Sie ist die Absolventin des ersten Jahrgangs der SoundTrack_Cologne-Summerschool für Filmkomponistinnen und wurde mit einer Special Mention bei der EUROPEAN TALENT COMPETITION 2018 der STC ausgezeichnet. Zuletzt erhielt sie den Sonderpreis des Wettbewerbs „Beethoven – zurück in die Zukunft“ (2020). Neben verschiedenen zeitgenössischen Stücken schrieb sie Musik zu Filmen, Serien und Computerspielen – zum Beispiel für die TV-Serie „Ethno“ (2020), die vom WDR in Auftrag gegeben wurde und an der sie mit Nathalie Hausmann und Franziska Pohlmann zusammengearbeitet hat. Die drei Komponistinnen sind Teil des Female Composers Collective „Track 15“. Susanne Hardt wird ihre Arbeit an „Ethno“ im Rahmen einer Case Study beleuchten.

SoundTrack_Cologne 18

This year's Academy Award winner Nicolas Becker ("Sound of Metal" – Best Sound), composers Antonio Gambale ("Unorthodox"), Nathaniel Méchaly ("Taken"), Flemming Nordkrog (HARPA Award for "Shine Your Eyes"), Ali N. Askin ("Barbarians") and Susanne Hardt ("Ethno") will talk about their film and television projects at SoundTrack_Cologne 18 (November 17 – 20, 2021). In addition, the film festival SEE THE SOUND will bring "Shine Your Eyes" on Fri., 19.11. and CinePop will bring "Sound of Metal" on Sat., 20.11. to the movie screen.

Nicolas Becker – „Sound of Metal”

And the Oscar goes to: Nicolas Becker! Nathaniel Méchaly – Composer Talk

Nathaniel Méchaly is not only a film musician, but also a renowned composer for theatre music and contemporary dance. He wrote his first score in 2004 for "Avanim" by Raphael Nadjari, followed by Guy Ritchie's "Revolver" (2005) and Wong Kar-wai's "The Grandmaster" (2013), among others. Ali N. Askin - "Barbarians”

Ali N. Askin is a multi-talent: he composes, arranges, produces and moves between the most diverse genres: electronic music, hip hop, jazz tunes and club tracks are just as much a part of his range as orchestral scores. Already in the early 90s he gained international fame through his work as arranger and assistant for Frank Zappa & Ensemble Modern (for example "The Yellow Shark").
He has also been a successful film composer for German and international TV series and films for over 20 years. His IMDb entry counts a total of over 70 credits, including "Pettersson and Findus" three times, but also the documentary "The Green Wave" or the series "Türkisch für Anfänger". In 2008 he received the "Lola" for Best Film Score for "Leroy". His most recent scores include "Dogs of Berlin" and "Barbarians" (Netflix). Antonio Gambale - "Unorthodox"

"Unorthodox" is one of the most successful Netflix series and has been awarded the German Television Award and the Primetime Emmy, among others. In addition, it was nominated in seven more categories  for the Primetime Emmy. Italian composer Antonio Gambale, who wrote the music for the acclaimed Studio Hamburg production, received  two of those nominations.
The Italian, who got his first job as a composer for a TV commercial at the age of 19, can look back on a successful 25-year career to date: He has worked with his colleague Philippe Rombi on films by François Ozon and with Pierre Adenot on "La Belle et La Bête (Beauty and the Beast)", among others. He scored the feature film "Joe Cinque's Consolation", which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Gambale will shed light on his work on "Unorthodox" in a case study at SoundTrack_Cologne.


Flemming Nordkrog - "Shine Your Eyes"

"Original, unconventional and mystical,” said the HARPA jury earlier this year. Flemming Nordkrog won this year's HARPA Award for his extraordinary score to "Shine your Eyes" and also received the Carl Prisen Award 2021. The Danish composer has written music for more than 25 feature films, numerous TV series, documentaries, TV movies and short films in Denmark, France, Belgium, Brazil and the USA. Recently, Nordkrog finished his work on the French feature film "Ogre" by Arnaud Malherbe, which will be presented at the Deauville Film Festival this year, and Philippe Lioret's "Sixteen". In total, he lists over 100 credits as a composer.
At STC he will present his work on "Shine your Eyes" in a case study. SEE THE SOUND will show the drama on Friday, November 19 at the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Tickets: www.seethesound.de.

Susanne Hardt - "Ethno”

Susanne Hardt is a music theorist and (film) composer. She has a bachelor's degree in music theory, a master's degree in film music and is currently completing her doctorate. She is the graduate of the first year of the SoundTrack_Cologne Summer School for female film composers and was awarded a Special Mention at the STC's EUROPEAN TALENT COMPETITION 2018. Most recently, she received the Special Prize of the competition "Beethoven - Back to the Future" (2020). In addition to various contemporary pieces, she has written music for films, series and computer games - for example for the TV series "Ethno" (2020), commissioned by WDR, on which she collaborated with Nathalie Hausmann and Franziska Pohlmann. The three composers are part of the Female Composers Collective "Track 15". Susanne Hardt will shed light on her work on "Ethno" in a case study.
