„Sie ist eine echte Heldin ihres Metiers“ betitelt der Bayerische Rundfunk die erfolgreiche Britin, die als erste Frau den Oscar für die Beste Filmmusik erhielt. Nun wird Rachel Portman als erste weibliche Komponistin auch mit dem Lifetime Achievement Award der SoundTrack_Cologne 18 für ihr Lebenswerk geehrt. Die Preisverleihung findet am Samstag, 20.11.2021 in der IHK Köln statt. Portman wird zudem am Samstagnachmittag in einem Panel über ihre Arbeit sprechen.

Rachel Portman begann im Alter von 14 Jahren zu komponieren und studierte Musik an der University of Oxford. Später sammelte sie Erfahrungen bei der BBC und bei Channel-4, für deren TV-Dramen sie die Musik verfasste (z.B. „Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit“, Mike Leighs „Four Days In July“ und Jim Hensons „Storyteller“-Serie).

Seitdem hat die Britin über 100 Scores für Film, Fernsehen und Theater geschrieben, darunter für Roman Polanskis „Oliver Twist”, Jonathan Demmes „Der Manchurian Kandidat“, Lone Scherfigs „Zwei an einem Tag“, Alejandro Agrestis „Das Haus am See“, Mark Romaneks „Alles, was wir geben mussten”, Robert Redfords „Die Legende von Bagger Vance“ oder Mike Newells „Mona Lisas Lächeln“. Zuletzt komponierte sie die Filmmusik zu dem Dokumentarfilm „Julia“, der dieses Jahr erschienen ist und das Leben der Fernsehköchin und Autorin Julia Child beleuchtet.

„Dass ich eine Frau bin, hat mich nie aufgehalten“, sagte Rachel Portman gegenüber dem SWR – 1997 wurde sie als erste Frau in der Geschichte mit einem Oscar für Jane Austens Klassiker „Emma“ ausgezeichnet. Sie war auch die erste Komponistin, die einen Primetime Emmy Award für Dee Rees‘ „Bessie“ gewann. Zwei weitere Oscar-Nominierungen erhielt sie für Lasse Hallströms „Gottes Werk & Teufels Beitrag“ und „Chocolat – Ein kleiner Biss genügt“, was ihr auch eine Golden-Globe-Nominierung einbrachte. Eine BAFTA-Nominierung gab es zudem für „Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit” und „The Woman in Black”.

Rachel Portman reiht sich als Gewinnerin des SoundTrack_Cologne Lifetime Achievement Awards in die Gruppe vieler renommierter Preisträger wie Craig Armstrong, Bruce Broughton, Cliff Martinez, Michael Nyman, Irmin Schmidt, Peter Thomas, Klaus Doldinger oder Don Davis ein.

Der Einlass zu den Veranstaltungen der SoundTrack_Cologne wird nur geimpften oder genesenen Personen gewährt („2G-Regel“). Zusätzlich muss beim Abholen des Badges ein Nachweis über einen negativen Corona-Test (nicht älter als 24h) vorgelegt werden. ‘She is a true heroine of her profession’ is how Bayerischer Rundfunk describes the successful British composer who was the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Film Score. Now Rachel Portman will also be honoured as the first female composer with the Lifetime Achievement Award at SoundTrack_Cologne 18. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, Nov 20, 2021 at the IHK Köln. Portman will also speak about her body of work on a panel on Saturday afternoon.

Most recently Portman wrote the score for the documentary ‘Julia’ which chronicles the life of TV chef and author Julia Child and was released in 2021.

‘The fact that I am a woman never stopped me‘ Rachel Portman told the SWR. In 1997, she became the first female composer to win an Academy Award, which she received for the score of Jane Austen’s classic ‘Emma’. She was also the first female composer to win a Primetime Emmy Award, which she received for ‘Bessie’ by Dee Rees. She has received two further Academy Nominations for ‘The Cider House Rules’ and ‘Chocolat’ by Lasse Hallström, which also earned her a Golden Globe Nomination as well as Bafta nominations for ‘Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit’ and ‘The Woman in Black’.

As the winner of the SoundTrack_Cologne Lifetime Achievement Award, Rachel Portman joins the ranks of many renowned prize winners such as Craig Armstrong, Bruce Broughton, Cliff Martinez, Michael Nyman, Irmin Schmidt, Peter Thomas, Klaus Doldinger or Don Davis.
